Background

Early in 1995, several Amateur Radio operators involved in local public service communications recognized the need for an independent and non-aligned organization, to meet the growing needs of developing auxiliary emergency communications services   (  Amateur Radio  ) in the New York City and metropolitan area. They Agreed to form such an organization, and so was born the New York City Metropolitan Emergency Tactical Radio Organization, N.Y.C. M.E.T.R.O. for short.

By August, 1995, NYC METRO was formally incorporated under section 402 of the New York State Not-For-Profit Corporation Law. In January, 1996 we received Internal Revenue Service status as a 501 (c)(3) and 509 (a)(1) publicly supported organization.

Mission
NYC METRO's mission is simple: to support the Amateur Radio emergency services organizations and groups as far as possible, through grants and donations. Grant monies will be used to purchase vital equipment and supplies for those groups otherwise unable to make large acquisitions on their own, and to help maintain existing equipment essential for the provision of auxiliary emergency communications.

NYC METRO will provide, in the future, educational and scientific/technical training and support as related to Amateur Radio emergency communications.    Work is also in progress on a permanent headquarters for  NYC METRO.

NYC METRO-- The Club
NYC METRO also functions as an Amateur Radio club, but not as a typical Amateur Radio club. Membership is open to any Federal Communications Commission - licensed Amateur Radio operator who is a member/volunteer of the American Radio Relay League's Amateur Radio  Emergency Service ( ARES ) and /or government -sponsored Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) group. An individual applying for membership must also demonstrate a sincere interest in the promotion of the Amateur Radio Service, with respect to the providing of emergency communications. Dues in NYC METRO, currently a modest $ 15 per year, largely help to offset typical administrative expenses of the organization, such as postage and printing. Tax- deductible donations are welcome as well.

NYC METRO has an FCC club callsign, KN2MET. This callsign is used  when NYC METRO is on the air running a special event operation, which honors those involved in groups such as ARES, RACES, SKY WARN, and the Military Affiliated Radio System ( MARS ) or DX-ing world wide.
